Frequently Asked Questions
How much is my total refund amount?
The average pension refund is 11.800 Euros. However, your total refund amount depends on your personal circumstances such as the total amount contributed, and whether you have received a pension adjustment or received rehabilitation benefits.
Unless you have already received benefits from German pension insurance that would block your contributions, you will get back 100% of the mandatory pension contributions deducted from your salary while you were employed. Paid for voluntary insurance as well? 50% of the voluntary contributions are refundable.
If you applied for pension splitting, or you took part in a pension equalization in a divorce ruling, your refund amount will be increased or reduced by 50% of the amount that you owe your (ex) partner.
Since 2018, the German pension insurance contribution rate has been fixed at 9.3% of your gross income, capped–in 2024–at €7,550 monthly gross wage in West Germany. If your income exceeds this cap, you only contribute 9.3% of €7,550 and the exceeding amount is not subject to pension deduction. Non-refundable contributions include the employer’s share, contributions made on your behalf by unemployment insurance, and credits for applied parenting periods.
How long does the refund process take?
With our extensive experience and professional tools, GermanyPensionRefund.com streamlines the refund process, allowing you to claim your refund online and reduce processing times to under 8 weeks. Our partnering law firms have a direct digital connection to the German pension office (Deutsche Rentenversicherung), enabling faster claims. This is why we can deliver super fast refunds in only 8 weeks on average, compared to the six months or longer for self-submitted claims. The pension office must process claims within 6 months, but staff shortages mean real pension applications take priority, often delaying refund claims beyond the official deadline.
How much is your service fee?
Our service fee is 9.75% of the refunded amount, including VAT and any external law firm costs. There are no additional fees or hidden costs, and you only pay if you receive a refund—it’s completely success-based. There is no minimum fee.
Will claiming a pension refund affect my chances of employment in the future?
Once your pension benefits refund is granted, your pension account will be reset to zero and closed. If you work in Germany again, your account will be reopened, and you’ll start fresh. Claiming a refund has no impact on your employment prospects as employers do not consider your past, current, or future pension balance. If you are planning to retire in Germany, or acquire German citizenship, you might consider refraining from getting your refund.
Is my pension refund taxable?
Pension refunds are not subject to taxation in Germany. However, if the refunded amount is taxable in your home country foreign income depends on your local tax laws. It’s best to consult your local tax advisor. If needed, we can provide documents to verify the source of income.
