What is Pension Refund Germany?

The German pension system is a social security program that offers pensions to retirees. It’s made up of obligatory contributions from employees and their employers. This means you pay 9.3% of your gross salary to the German pension system while you reside there.

However, if you’re an Indian citizen who worked in Germany and contributed to this system, you may get your German pension contributions back when you leave the country. But there are certain conditions that need to be met.

Germany Pension Refund Eligibility for Indians

Not everyone can get a German pension refund. It depends on how long you worked in Germany, what your job was, and how long it’s been since you left the country. Here’s what Indian citizens need to know:

There are two basic rules that are applied to anyone who wants to receive a German pension refund:

  • You must live outside the EU or UK at the time you apply for the german pension refund
  •  At least 2 years must have passed since your last pension contribution

However, if you are a citizen of India there is an additional criteria. You can only apply if you worked in Germany for less than 59 months (5 years). And if you are not allowed to keep paying German Pension contributions (voluntary pension insurance / Freiwillige Versicherung).

If you meet these requirements, then you can begin your German pension refund process now. Our team will make sure you receive your German pension refunds with peace of mind. Contact us today to schedule a free eligibility assessment and get expert assistance throughout your application process.

Are Indian Citizens Allowed to Pay German Pension Insurance Contributions After Leaving Germany?

According to the Social Security Agreement between Germany and India, if you reside in the European Union, you are allowed to continue making pension contributions to Germany. This helps you qualify for future benefits from the German pension system.

If you’ve already paid into the German pension fund for at least 5 years, you can keep paying from anywhere in the world. But you won’t receive a German pension refund of your contributions since you’ve qualified for an old-age pension in Germany.

In other words:

If you’re an Indian citizen living outside the European Union (EU) and haven’t qualified for retirement benefits yet, you can claim a German pension refund.
