How to manually calculate my pension refund?

To manually calculate the amount of money you will get back if you claim a refund (eligibility given), you need to consider the contributions you made to statutory pension insurance. Use this formula:

Your gross salary for every year you worked in Germany (up to the cap) times the percentage in the corresponding year, based on the paid pension contributions to the German pension system.

Add the sums together and you have your German pension refund amount.

But before you start looking up caps and percentages, simply use the free calculator that we’ve built just for you 🙂.refund, we can help you get your money back.

Are You Eligible for a German Pension Refund?

Eligibility for a German pension refund depends on a few things, like your nationality, where you live now, how long you worked in Germany, and how long it’s been since you last worked there. Let’s look at these requirements in more detail:

Nationality

Whether you can get a pension refund or not depends a lot on your nationality. Non-EU citizens can usually get a refund of their pension contributions. EU citizens usually stay in the German pension system. But they can also move their pension payments to other EU countries instead of getting a refund.

Country of Residence

Your country of residence can affect your pension insurance refund eligibility. Some countries have agreements with Germany, so residents may have different rules. If you live in a country without an agreement, you may still be able to claim your contributions back.

Duration of Work in Germany

The time you worked in Germany, which is reflected in your insurance record, is important in the pension refund process. You need to have worked for at least 5 years and paid into the pension system before reaching retirement age. If you worked for a shorter time, you may still qualify, but you will get less money back.

Time Since Last Work in Germany

To apply for a pension refund in Germany, you must wait at least 24 months from your last day of employment. This waiting period confirms that you have stopped paying contributions to the German pension insurance system and have left the German labor market. Consider this timeline when planning to submit your claim.
